Almost certainly, yes. Any exterior work in a city-designated historic district requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Design Review Board. We have extensive experience preparing the necessary documentation, material samples, and photos to guide your project through this process successfully.
For historic authenticity, a modified bitumen or built-up roof (gravel) is appropriate. For modern performance on a flat or low-slope roof, a white TPO or PVC membrane is excellent for reflecting UV and shedding snow. We guide you through the trade-offs between tradition and modern technology.
The solution is in the attic, not just the roof. It requires a combination of attic venting installation to create a cold roof deck, sufficient insulation at the eaves to prevent heat loss, and sometimes, the installation of heating cables or a metal ice belt at the edge.
